Br. Nicholas' Solemn Profession

Yesterday, Br. Nicholas of New Melleray Abbey made his solemn profession as a Cistercian monk.. Almost all of the Mississippi Abbey sisters made the 20 minute drive over to New Melleray to witness this sacred event.  After Mass a dinner was served for all of Br. Nicholas' guests.

After a long hard winter a few signs of spring have appeared even though there is still snow on the ground.  Some daffodils near the front entrance are starting to come out beneath the snow.  Crocus are poking out of the few bare spots that have appeared.  It actually got to 50 degrees yesterday.  After weeks of sub zero temperatures it seemed absolutely balmy!

Our Abbey was founded almost 50 years ago.  The foundresses arrived on October 18, 1964 and the first Mass was celebrated on November 4, 1964; we use this date as our official foundation day.  We are now preparing our year of celebration which will begin on July 11th this year, the feast of St. Benedict.  We will have a booklet about our fifty years and Sr. Kathleen, our archivist is going through the old and new photo albums, picking and choosing what to include in the booklet.   It is good work for this extremely snowy and cold winter season.
